Günther Mik is a primary school teacher in a school at the heart of Vienna who started the project Medienkunstschule. Once a week a group of about twenty 6-11 year olds meet at the MUMOK to produce “media art”: videos in in response to art exhibitions or to works by well known video artists. Children playfully explore space, body and movements making first experiences in working with video. Over 30 of their productions can be viewed at www.youtube.com/medienkunstschule some of them quite intriguing and mysterious.
In Wörterfallen children write everywhere but in their exercise books, creating a tapestry of words on the ground, walls and even tree. While the sound track does not quite work for me it is still worth seeing. I like the way their whole bodies are engaged in writing, and their focussed concentration.
